Why I Even Bothered Making a Daily Pet Care Schedule

Used to be total chaos. Daily care plan for your pet Wake up whenever, toss food in bowl whenever, walk him if it wasn’t negative a million degrees (Chicago winter, am I right?). Then he started destroying couch cushions at 2 a.m. because bored + anxious. Vet visit cost me like $180 just for them to say “routine helps.” Facepalm.

So I sat down one Sunday with a legal pad and tried to make sense of it. The goal wasn’t perfection—it was “don’t let the dog become feral and don’t let me feel like a terrible pet parent.”

My Actual Daily Care Plan for My Pet (With the Flaws)

Here’s the version taped to my fridge right now (yes it’s crooked, yes there’s a ketchup stain on Tuesday):

Morning 6:45–8ish

  • First potty walk (10–15 min, longer if no ice on sidewalk)
  • Breakfast: 1½ cups kibble + spoonful of pumpkin because he gets gassy otherwise
  • Quick backyard fetch while I scroll phone and pretend to be productive

Afternoon (whenever I can)

  • Midday potty if someone’s home or dog walker comes (we pay a neighborhood kid $15 sometimes)
  • Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter—keeps him busy 20 minutes

Evening 5:30–7:30

  • Big walk—neighborhood loop or park if it’s not pouring
  • Dinner around 6–7
  • Brush fur (he sheds like crazy), check paws for salt in winter

Night 9:30–10

  • Last potty
  • Dental chew if I remember (spoiler: 60% of nights I don’t)

For better feeding portion advice I always end up back at the PetMD feeding calculator—it’s simple and doesn’t judge you.

The Stuff I Mess Up Constantly

  • Water bowl: I’ve left it empty twice this month. Found him drinking out of the toilet. Classy.
  • Teeth brushing: He hates the poultry-flavor paste so much he runs behind the couch. I bribe with cheese now.
  • Treats: I say “just training treats” but then give extras because those eyes. Vet scale doesn’t lie.
  • Consistency: Travel weeks? Routine collapses. He stays with my sister and comes back acting like a wild animal again.

But weirdly, even with the screw-ups, having most of a daily pet care routine keeps things 80% better than before.

Tools & Hacks I Actually Use

  • Cheap dry-erase calendar from Target ($4.99)
  • AmazonBasics treat pouch for walks (link if you’re curious: this one)

  • AKC’s routine tips page—solid no-BS advice

Okay, Your Turn I Guess

Look, if you’re reading this thinking “mine’s way worse,” you’re probably fine. Start with three things: regular meals, regular potty, some play. Write it on whatever—napkin, phone note, sticky on the mirror. Tweak it when it breaks (it will break).

What’s the most annoying part of your pet’s routine? Or the thing you always forget? Tell me in the comments so I can feel less alone in my chaos.
