Alright yall, homemade pet food recipes are the hill I’m currently dying on and also kind of thriving on, depending on the day. It’s 3 degrees outside right now in central Ohio, windows fogged up, space heater making that little ticking sound like it’s about to catch fire, and Rufus is sprawled across my feet snoring so loud I can barely think. If you’re here because your dog’s acting like store kibble personally insulted him, welcome to the club. I’ve been deep in this homemade pet food recipes trenches for almost 18 months now and I still screw it up sometimes.

How I Accidentally Became That Person Who Cooks for Their Dog

Started back in fall of 2024 when Rufus (beagle-lab mix, 62 lbs of chaos) decided regular kibble was no longer acceptable. I snapped. Googled “can I just make dog food myself” at 11 pm one night while eating cold pizza, found some forums, and thought “how hard can it be?”

Spoiler: pretty hard if you don’t want your dog to get rickets or something.

First batch I made was basically boiled chicken thighs, white rice, and baby carrots I ran through the food processor like an idiot. Looked like wet sawdust. Rufus gobbled it for two days then had diarrhea so bad I had to throw away the bath mat. I sat on the bathroom floor crying at 4 am googling “is my dog dying” while he looked at me like “you did this.”

But I didn’t quit. I’m stubborn like that.

Easy Chicken & Pumpkin Everyday Bowl

This is the one I make when I’m tired and just want to survive the week.

  • 3 lbs chicken thighs (bone-in is fine, I debone after cooking because I’m lazy)
  • 2 cups cooked brown rice or quinoa if I’m feeling bougie
  • 1 can pure pumpkin (15 oz, not the pie kind with spices)
  • 1 cup frozen peas & carrots mix (no need to thaw, just dump in)
  • 1 big spoonful plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tsp salmon oil (coat gets so soft now it’s ridiculous)
  • 1 tsp eggshell powder or the BalanceIt supplement stuff

Pressure cook or slow cook the chicken, shred, mix everything while it’s warm. Portion into deli containers. Fridge 4 days max, freeze the rest. I warm his serving in the microwave for 18 seconds because cold food makes him act like I’m trying to poison him.

Ground Beef & Sweet Potato “Meatloaf” Patties

Rufus goes feral for this.

  • 2 lbs 85/15 ground beef
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, grated raw (yes raw, food processor ftw)
  • 1 cup chopped kale or spinach (he doesn’t notice)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • Calcium supplement per vet calc

Mix, form into palm-sized patties, bake at 375°F for 25 min flipping halfway. Smells like hamburger helper but healthier. I’ve eaten the edges more than once when I was hangry. Tastes… fine?

Leftover Turkey & Oat Quick Breakfast

Post-Thanksgiving lifesaver.

Ground turkey, old-fashioned oats, shredded zucchini, scrambled egg, dash of turmeric. Fry in little blobs. Done in 12 minutes.

Look, balance is key. I use Balance It to tweak recipes so I’m not accidentally giving him heart disease or whatever. Also read the Tufts clinical nutrition blog obsessively. FDA pet food page too when I’m paranoid.

Dumb Stuff I Did (Learn From My Pain)

  • Thought “a little garlic won’t hurt” → emergency vet google sesh at midnight.
  • Skipped transition week → poop Armageddon for four days.
  • Used too much liver → he got weirdly thirsty and lethargic. Lesson learned.
  • Forgot to weigh portions → Rufus gained 4 lbs in a month. Oops.

Also my kitchen trash can now permanently smells faintly like cooked meat. My roommate complains. Whatever.
